Most auto connoisseurs consider the Porsche 64 which is also sometimes known as the VW Aerocoupe, Type 64 and Type 64K10 as being the first automobile made by Porsche. It was manufactured mainly from parts from the Model 64 VW Beetle and that is where the model number comes from. The Porsche 64’s flat-four engine produced fifty b.h.p. and gave the vehicle a top speed of 160 km/h.
The body was designed by Porsche Burro after wind tunnel tests made for the Type 114, a V10 racer that never saw the light of day as a production car. Dr. Porsche planned to enter the roadster in the 1939 Berlin to Rome race event. The bodywork specialist company Reutter made three cars from shaped aluminum. Out of the three, one was totaled in the early years of World War II by a VW bureaucrat. The two cars that remained were used by the exclusively by the Porsche family. Towards the end of World War Two, they put one of the vehicles in storage and used the other one. American troops discovered the one put in storage in May 1945, cut the top of it off and took it joyriding for a few weeks until the engine went and it was junked. Farina restored the only remaining Porsche 64 in 1947, as it was owned and driven by Ferry Porsche. In 1949, the Austrian racer Otto Matte bought the car and raced it, winning the Alpine Rally in 1950 in it.
Now nearly a hundred years after its founder started designing automobiles, Porsche is still popular, the result of offering a cure for a mid-life crisis similar to owning a Harley – Davidson motorcycle. Porsche’s lineup now features four model lines: the incredibly sexy and popular Boxster, the enduring 911 models, the relatively new Cayenne SUV, and the stunningly opulent Carrera GT, and if you can’t afford their cars, Porsche also offers watches, luggage, and tennis rackets bearing its name. The Porsche 968 simply means the legacy of the Porsche 944 gets to live on. In 1991 the 944 S2 was discontinue but the 968 was waiting in the wings to make its debut.
Porsche has been busy working on a replacement model for sometime which originally was going to be called the 944 S3 but with so many new features they thought it was better to actually give it an entire new image.
It hit the market retaining all of the great things of the 944 and added all the great new features. If you thought the 944 looked great the 968 is even more impressive with its sleek new lines while still clearly keeping its 944 image.
It has fully integrated bumpers that are actually an extension of the Carrere 2, the air intakes have been rearranged, and it comes with pop up headlamps, red lenses neutral dense taillights, with the 968 lettering on the rear deck lid.
The 16 valve DOHC inline 4 cylinder aluminum block has plenty to offer with an amazing 236 HP at 6200 RPM. It has a compression ration of 8.3:1 and 13.1 lbs per horsepower. You can choose from a 6 speed manual transmission or 4 speed tiptronic.
The independent front has lower control arm, spring struts, and anti roll bar while the independent rear has semi trailing arms, anti roll bar, and transverse torsion bars.
Fuel consumption isn’t really great but there are worse. It gets 17 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway. Of course this is the type of car you want to get out on the road and let loose.
You’ll get ¼ mile in 14.4 seconds with the 6 speed or 15.1 with the tiptronic transmission. You get 0-60 MPG in 5.9 seconds with the 6 speed or 7 seconds with the tiptronic. (more…)

It is probably a guy thing but do you have a favorite auto in your life? Is there some set of wheels that far outshines all others in your life? No matter how many shiny, glitzy vehicles come along, there is that one car that lives in your memory forever. Whether it is a cheap, old clunker or a usable vehicle, it lives in fondness in your mind.
Such a car was not the first I ever had. As a matter of fact, it came down the list quite a country mile. To some, it was a strange looking vehicle called a Porsche Speedster, fondly called my own bathtub on wheels. That was not my name but was what most everyone decided that was the best description of the somewhat strange auto.
It was aerodynamically very efficient regardless the strange configuration. It was an open convertible, with a bit of tongue in cheek design. My bathtub had a top. of sorts, but the protection it provided was about the same whether up or down considering all the holes and rips it sported. But that didn’t stop the family from touring several states of the nation with bravado and zest. (more…)
Gemballa is a company based in Leonberg near Stuttgart, Germany. Opened by, and named after, Uwe Gemballa. Established in 1981.
They provide aftermarket parts mainly for Porsche.
A 600hp car held the lap record for road cars at the Nürburgring in the late 1990s once, and again in 2001 when Wolfgang Kaufmann lowered it to 7:32,52 min. It was since beaten by a Porsche Carrera GT, by less than a second. (more…)
